Tim Hortons expands

Tim Hortons has signed a con***ional deal to buy 48 Bess Eaton coffee shops in the northeastern United States from Bess Eaton Donut Flour Co. and partner Louis Gencarelli.
Financial details were not given in a release Monday.
The Canadian coffee-and-snacks restaurant chain said the deal to buy the shops in Rhode Island, Connecticut and Massachusetts is con***ional on approval by the bankruptcy court overseeing Bess Eaton.
Bess Eaton filed for protection from cre***ors in Rhode Island.
Tim Hortons, the largest coffee and fresh baked goods restaurant chain in Canada, is a subsidiary of Wendy''s International Inc.

Air Canada''s chief restructuring officer Calin Rovinescu has resigned, the airline said Wednesday as it looked to give the court-appointed monitor a bigger role in its restructuring.
The airline said Mr. Rovinescu''s responsibilities will be taken over by members of the executive management "with an expanded role for the monitor." He will be available in an advisory capacity for several weeks, the Montreal-based airline said.
CEO Robert Milton will take over some of the responsibilities held by the chief restructuring officer post, which was created after the airline filed for bankruptcy protection last April.
Mr. Milton and Mr. Rovinescu drew ire from the airline''s employees because they stood to receive millions of dollars worth of stock through their tentative deal with Victor Li''s Trinity Time Investments Ltd., while rank and file employees gave up hundreds of millions of dollars in concessions.
Mr. Milton and Mr. Rovinescu obtained those concessions on the con***ion that pensions not be touched, so unions are loath to agree to new concessions from the same bosses.
But the airline''s top executives are now scrambling to find an alternative investor after Mr. Li announced Friday he will likely abandon his $650-million investment because Air Canada has not met anticipated financial forecasts and because the airline''s unions have refused key changes to their pension plans.
"I leave with the confidence that our achievements to date have positioned the airline for a successful completion of the restructuring," Mr. Rovinescu said. "I am confident that all stakeholders in this restructuring have the will to resolve the outstanding issues, however difficult they may be."
"We have dramatically revised our business model and while there is still considerable work to be completed, significant progress has been made in our revenue, fleet and cost restructuring," said Mr. Rovinescu.
Air Canada said it will ask the court to amend the initial Companies'' Cre***ors Arrangement Act order to expand monitor''s role.
"Beyond his invaluable contribution in leading our restructuring process which has achieved remarkable results in an unprecedented short period of time and leaves us a clear path towards a successful conclusion, Calin was an important agent of change while at Air Canada," Mr. Milton said.
Air Canada said that Paul Brotto, now an executive vice-president will take over much of the day-to-day restructuring duties.
Mr. Rovinescu joined Air Canada in April, 2000, as an executive vice-president.
"We hope that with the appointment of a new restructuring officer, the restructuring process will be more transparent and inclusive, and we believe this will result in a successful exit from bankruptcy protection," Don Johnson, president of Air Canada Pilots Union, said in a statement Wednesday afternoon.
