Once upon a time there lived a very beautiful and charming princess, named Chuc-Nu. She was one of the many daughters of the King of Heaven. Chuc-Nu was a very hard-working lady and she was often seen sitting on the shore of the Silver River to sew clothes for her younger sisters.
One day a young man herded his buffaloes to the river. His name was Nguu-Lang. He was very handsome. He fell in love with the princess at first sight, and she loved him, too. The King of Heaven, fully aware of their love, consented for her daughter to marry Nguu-Lang. But the couple had to promise to continue their work after their marriage.
They enjoyed being married so much the forgot their promise. The King became furious and ordered them to separate. Each of them would live on one side of the river and could only look at each other from across the river. The King allowed them to meet once a year in the seventh month of the lunar year. This month is called "The Month of Sudden and Short Showers". When they meet each other, they usually cry for joy. They cry even more bitterly when it is time for separation.
That is why it rains torrentially at the beginning of the seventh lunar month in Vietnam. If you happen to be in the countryside during this month, you do not expect to find any ravens. They are believed to have flown to the sky to help carry the bridge across the river for the reunion of Chuc-Nu and Nguu-Lang and if you look at the sky on clear nights, you may see the Silver River which looks like a long milky white strip. Một ngày kia, có một chàng trai tên Ngưu Lang khôi ngô tuấn tú (bô giai)dắt trâu đến bên dòng sông nọ. Chàng yêu công chúa ngay từ cái nhìn đầu tiên, Chức Nữ cũng đáp lại tình yêu của chàng. Ngọc Hoàng biết được chuyện và đồng ý gả công chúa cho Ngưu Lang nhưng bắt họ hứa tiếp tục công việc của mình sau khi cưới.
Họ sống rất hạnh phúc bên nhau nhưng quên mất lời hứa với vua cha. Ngọc Hoàng nổi giận, bắt họ phải chia cách và chỉ được nhìn thấy nhau từ hai bờ sông, họ được gặp nhau chỉ 1 lần trong năm vào tháng thứ 7 âm lịch ( còn được được gọi là tháng mưa Ngâu). Khi họ gặp nhau họ đã khóc rất nhiều vì sự đoàn tụ ngắn ngủi của mình, khi chia tay họ thậm chí còn khoác ác hơn.

Chuyện kể ngày xưa phía Tây thành Nam Dương có một chàng
trai trẻ thông minh, trung hậu, cha mẹ đã mất, ở với anh ruột và
chị dâu . Chị dâu họ Mã rất độc ác, thường đối xử tàn tệ với em
chồng, bắt phải làm nhiều việc cực nhọc. Một mùa thu, chị ta
giao cho em chồng 9 con trâu đưa đi chăn, hẹn đến khi nào có
đủ 10 trâu thì mới được về nhà. Cậu bé chăn trâu (Ngưu Lang)
hay CowBoy (tiếng Hoa thì trâu bò đều là ngưu cả) đành phải
đánh đàn trâu ra đi.
Ngưu Lang (NL) đánh trâu lên triền núi thả chăn, lòng buồn rầu
không biết đến bao giờ mới được trở về nhà. Một bà già đầu tóc
bạc phơ đến hỏi chuyện NL, rồi cười với cậu mà an ủi, "Đừng
buồn . Ở núi Phục Ngưu kia có một con trâu ốm . Cháu chịu khó
chăm sóc nó mạnh khoẻ, thì có đủ 10 con để về nhà ."
NL đi thật xa mới đến nơi, thấy một con trâu gầy ốm vô cùng,
bèn cắt nhiều cỏ tươi, lấy nước uống chăm sóc liền 3 ngày, thì
con trâu đỡ hẳn, ngóc cổ lên nói với NL rằng nó là tiên của núi
Phục Ngưu này, nhưng lỡ phạm luật trời mà bị phạt xuống trần
chẳng may gẫy một chân, cần rửa sương cúa 100 loài Hoa một
tháng mới khỏi . NL không nề hà, sáng sáng đi hứng sương
đọng hoa rừng, ngày ngày săn sóc trâu, tối ngủ bên trâu cho đủ
một tháng thì trâu khỏi hẳn . Cậu vui mừng dẫn trâu về nhà .
Chị dâu không vì thế mà tốt với NL . Nhiều lần chị ta muốn hại
NL, nhưng con trâu già cứu cậu . Chị dâu buồn thẹn thành giận,
đuổi NL khỏi nhà . NL chỉ đòi được con trâu để cùng ra đi .
Một hôm, Chức Nữ (cô gái dệt vải trên trời) cùng bầy tiên nữ
bay xuống trần đi chơi . Trâu già giúp NL gặp gỡ và hò hẹn với
CN . Từ ấy, CN hay lẻn xuống trần với NL, rồi làm vợ chàng .
CN còn lấy trộm tằm trời xuống cho dân và dạy người trần
trồng dâu nuôi tằm se tơ dệt lụa .
Đôi lứa chăm chỉ làm ăn, sinh được 1 trai 1 gái, gia đình rất
hạnh phúc . Nhưng ngày đẹp không bền, trên trời đã biết chuyện
và Vương Mẫu đích thân xuống trần bắt CN về trời, cắt đứt ái ân
đôi lứa.
NL không lên trời được, nhưng trâu già nói với NL sau khi nó
chết, có thể lấy da nó làm giày thì đi lên trời được. Khi có được
giày da trâu, NL cầm tay 2 con, dẵm mây chạy đuổi theo CN .
NL sắp đuổi tới nơi, Vương Mẫu (VM) vung trâm vàng trên đầu
một cái, thì một giòng sông sóng gió hung hãn hiện ra chắn
đường, NL và CN mỗi người một bên bờ sông, chỉ nhìn nhau
mà rớt nước mắt . Đàn chim Hỷ Tước (giống như quạ, nhưng
mỏ nhỏ như mỏ bồ câu -- raven) cảm động trước mối tình ấy,
hàng nghìn vạn con kéo nhau đến chung lưng dựa cánh làm
thành một cái cầu cho NL và CN đi lên mà gặp nhau . VM không
làm gì được, đành cho phép gia đình NL-CN hàng năm đến
ngày 7 tháng Bảy âm lịch được gặp nhau trên cầu chim Tước .
Từ đó, hàng năm cứ đến ngày 7 tháng Bảy âm lịch, các cô gái
đợi trăng non mới mọc, sắm soạn hoa quả, ngẩng đầu nhìn
ngắm hai bên sông Ngân Hà, tìm kiếm 2 ngôi sao NL và CN
đang lại gặp nhau, ước nguyện mình được đôi bàn tay khéo
léo, tâm trí sáng láng như CN, được mối nhân duyên vẹn toàn
và hạnh phúc như ý. Dịp lễ 7 tháng Bảy hình thành như thế đó.
Chuyện Ngâu và mưa Ngâu chắc người Việt thêm thắt vào.

Nguyên gốc câu chuyện này trong kho vàng văn học Việt Nam truyền thống có tên gọi là Ả Chức - Chàng Ngưu. Nội dung hơi khác của Tàu 1 chút, nhất là việc vì sao bọn quạ làm thành cây cầu....Trong chuyện của mình khi Chàng Ngưu và con trai lên trời thăm vợ, khi về nàng Chức bảo chồng con ngồi trên 1 chiếc trống lớn và buộc dây 1 đầu, dặn là khi nào trống chạm đất thì đánh lên để ở trên trời biết mà cắt dây. Khi đi ngang trời thì cậu bé đói quá đòi ăn, nó làm vãi mấy hạt cơm trên tang trống. Bọn quạ bay qua lao đến mổ ăn, vô tình tạo nên tiếng gõ, người vọ nghe thấy tưởng 2 bố con đã đến mặt đất nên cắt dây. Thế là 2 bố con chàng Ngưu ..."ra đi". Ông Trời thương tình mới cho chàng Ngưu lên trời làm người chăn trâu cho trời, để gia đình họ được đoàn tụ nhưng chỉ trong mấy ngày...khóc lóc tạo mưa trong tháng 7 đó. Còn bọn quạ do phạm lỗi nặng nên cứ vào ngày vợ chồng họ gặp nhau chúng phải hợp lại đội đá và lấy thân mình làm thành 1 cây cầu để cho đôi lứa gặp gỡ. Chính vì vậy mà có tên là cầu Ô Thước ( quạ đen), cũng chỉ vì đội đá nhiều quá nên lũ quạ bị trốc đầu (lông trên đỉnh đầu chúng rất thưa). Chuyện VN hay ko ?
