Syria begin their campaign with a win
    Thursday, 20. August 2009 - Rajeeb Mukherjee
Last e***ion?Ts runners-up Syria began their campaign in the ONGC Nehru Cup with a convincing 2-0 win over 10-man Kyrgyzstan at the Ambedkar Stadium this evening.
With the grass shorn off the turf, the ground played much better and Syria took advantage of a sluggish Kyrgyzstan defence to pump in two goals on either side of the break.
Mohamad Al Zino opened the scoring in the ninth minute while Abdul Fatah Alaga increased the margin in the 72nd.
Following a throw in, Moutaz Kailouni turned Kyrgyzstan left fullback Usanov Rustem inside out and sent a delightful cross to Al Zino, whose free header gave goalkeeper Matiash Pavel no chance.
Despite some rare show of support for Kyrgyzstan, the Central Asian team was hardly a match for the skillful Syrians.
The goal forced Kyrgyzstan to push up a bit but the Syrians were dangerous on the break. They kept the flanks busy and could have won by a healthier margin. But perhaps they reserved their best for a later stage.
Kyrgyzstan, despite the presence of the tall Amirov Ildar, failed to utilize his services and he drifted out of the scene after some initial exchanges.
The Central Asians tried to step on the gas after the break but suffered a blow when Ablakimov Roman lunged at Alaga and Indian referee Pratap Singh showed him the red card in the 67th minute.
Syria scored their second goal five minutes later. Alaga, who twice missed out from close ?" a right footer in the third minute that goalkeeper Pavel kept out and then saw his shot blocked a minute before the goal ?" went past the goalkeeper after collecting a diagonal from Raja Rafe and placed the ball into the net.
With his win, Syria join Lebanon at the top of the five-team Nehru Cup table. The top two sides from the group stage will progress to the final.
    Post-match comments
    Anarbek Ormombikov (Coach, Kyrgyzstan)
"This match was difficult for us, but the send off in the second half affected our game plan."
On Syria: "Syria is experienced and a combined side and were definitely the best team today."
On the youngsters in the team: "The young players don''t have much experience, but they tried their best. I am happy with their performance."
On the next match against India: "The Indian team has got some talented players and they look fitter this time. After losing to Lebanon in the first match, they will definitely go for a win - but we are also prepared."
    Fajer Ibrahim (Coach, Syria)
"Due to lack of preparation, we were a bit slow at the start. But I definitely believ we will make progress with each passing day."
On India: "The Indian team was more active the last time compared to what we saw yesterday."
On ground con***ions: "The ground is better today, but I still think little bit of grass needs to be cut."

Đối thủ Vịt Lebanon đã thua Sri Lanka 3 - 4 tại giải Nehru Cup hôm qua
Issadeen stars as Sri Lanka stun Lebanon
    Sunday, 23 August 2009 01:54
NEW DELHI: Mohammed Issadeen?Ts hat-trick helped Sri Lanka stun tricky Lebanon 4-3 in their Nehru Cup opener on Saturday at the Ambedkar Stadium.
Issadeen and Ediri Channa combined well upfront and surprised the West Asians when the former slotted home the opener in the eighth minute but their joy was shortlived when Akram Moghrabi headed home the equaliser on a Mahmoud El Ali cross.
Lebanon were reduced to 10 men when Moghrabi was given his marching orders but Ali Al Saadi, who had scored Lebanon?Ts match-winner against India in the opener, put his team ahead at the stroke of half time.
Issadeen restored the parity for Sri Lanka 10 minutes from time while captain Chathura Maduranga made it 3-2 three minutes later. Issadeen skirted two defenders to complete his hat-trick two minutes before the final whistle.
Sri Lanka were also reduced to 10 men after W Hettiarachchi was redcarded for bringing down Ali El Etat in the injury time and Mohammad Korhani reduced the margin with a resulting penalty.
India will take on Kyrgyzstan on Sunday.

    Syria thrashes Sri Lanka
    Monday, 24. August 2009 - Sanjay Kumar
Sri Lanka suffered a heavy defeat against Syria in their second match, after putting up a scrappy performance in a thrilling encounter against Lebanon.
A lot was expected from the Sampatha Perera coached side after their win against Lebanon, but it proved to be a one sided affair with Syria trouncing Sri Lanka 4-0.
The Syrian midfielders as well as strikers had a happy outing and couldn?Tt have asked for more as the match drifted away from the Sri Lankan''s in the first half. Syria started the rout in the 26th minute, when Mohammed Al Zeno took full advantage of a defensive lapse and headed in a Moutaz Kalidini cross from the left flank to the far post. The Sri Lankan defenders were at sixes and sevens right from the start and were punished thrice for the defensive tactic relying highly on their offside trap.
Sri Lanka failed to learn their lesson from the first goal and was once more punished in a span of six minutes, when Abdelrazaq Al Hussain made it 2-0 in favour of Syria. The Arabs came all guns blazing after putting up a cautious start to their Nehru Cup campaign against Kyrgyzstan and went on to score the third goal through Abdul Fatah Alaga in the 37th minute. The speedy striker superbly collected a Wael Ayan cross from the left flank to take full advantage.
Sri Lanka never recovered from the early humiliation and was totally outclassed by the Fajer Ibrahim coached side. Syria went into the break with a handy lead of 3-0 and closed the proceedings of the first half.
Syria as expected were more relaxed in the second half and forced Sri Lanka to put more players up front. But the Sri Lankan strikers hardly gave a tough time to the compact Syrian defence. Sri Lanka?Ts trio of captain Siyaguna Kosgodage Chatura Maduranga Weerasinghe, strikers Ediri Bandalage Channa and Mohamed Naufar Mohamed Issadeen were totally off colored today and apart from some raw attempts none of their moves were as productive as it was against Lebanon. Further the Sri Lankan defence was put to several wall situations in the second half.
Syria on the other hand took full advantage of the sloppy defending by the Sri Lankans and scored the fourth goal through Abdul Fatah Alaga in the 55th minute. The striker was totally having a happy outing and scored his 2nd goal of the match, while netting in a side volley of a Raja Rafe cross from the right flank.
With this win Syria now have placed themselves at the top of the table with 6 points out of two matches and are getting better and better with each game. Sri Lanka will now take on defending champion India in a must situation to stay afloat for a place in the final.
    Post-Match Comments
    Fajer Ibrahim (Coach, Syria)
"This is the first time ever that we are playing an international tournament during the month of Ramadan."
"It was tough for us in this heat and humi***y. We played a bit slow initially before picking up the team."
"It will be an important match against Lebanon and we feel one point would be enough to get us in to the final."
    Sampatha Perera (Coach, Sri Lanka)
"We are playing just after a day break so the boys were exhausted. We also lost our best defender in the last match, so the defense was a bit weak."
    "We were physically outplayed."
"We did try to play attacking football. Had we played a defensive game, the score line would have been different."
