Carew strike sends Valencia through to semis


VALENCIA, Spain, April 17 (Reuters) - A stunning header from John Carew 15 minutes from time sent Valencia through to the Champions League semifinals on the away goals rule on Tuesday, the Norwegian's strike earning his side a 1-0 win over Arsenal and a 2-2 aggregate draw.

Valencia started brightly as they chased the goal that would be enough to take them through after a 2-1 defeat at Highbury but after a couple of chances, including a deflected Carew shot that brought a great save from David Seaman, Arsenal took control.

Thierry Henry twice got clear on the left only to be denied by last-gasp tackles, while a third foray ended with his shot across the face of goal skidding to safety.

Valencia had few clear chances in the second half apart from a Gaizka Mendieta run into the box that might have brought a penalty before Carew rose brilliantly to glance past Seaman from Jocelyn Angloma's cross on 75 minutes.

Valencia will now play Leeds in the semifinals.
