Vietnam Police Seize Pirated Videos and Compact Discs

HANOI (AP)--Vietnamese police have seized about 40,000 pirated compact discs and videotapes in southern Ho Chi Minh City, state-controlled media reported Saturday.

Police also seized CD copying machines in the raids Friday, the Lao Dong (Labor) trade union newspaper said.

Last week, Vietnam's National Assembly approved a U.S. trade agreement in which the government pledged to open the country's markets to foreign trade and investment and tighten copyright protection.

Last month, police in Ho Chi Minh City seized more than 40,000 CDs, VCDs and DVDs, in the largest ever confiscation in the city.

In September, police in Hanoi arrested the leaders of what they said was the capital's largest video piracy ring and seized more than 50,000 pirated CDs, VCDs and videotapes.

Pirated CDs are widely available in Vietnam for about 13,000 dong ($1=VND14,975.00) a piece.
