Russia, Vietnam to Discuss Prospects for Bilateral Military- Industrial Cooperation - Source

Sept 23 (Interfax-AVN) - It is expected that the acquisition of Russian arms by Vietnam will be discussed within the framework of a visit of Vietnamese National Defense Minister Phung Quang Thanh to Russia, a source with the Russian military- industrial complex told Interfax-AVN.

"Meetings of the Vietnamese minister with the leadership of the Federal Service of Ministry-Technical Cooperation and Rosoboronexport are expected to focus on a possibility to sign new arms contracts," the source said.

"Hanoi is interested in aircraft and naval equipment, as well as air defense systems, produced in Russia," he said.

Russia has remained the largest arms and hardware exporter to Vietnam following the collapse of the Soviet Union, he said. In particular, Russia delivered missile-armed patrol boats, modernized Sukhoi Su-22M4 fighters and sold over ten Sukhoi aircraft to Vietnam in the 1990s.

It was also reported that Vietnam would buy about 20 Su-30 aircraft. Hanoi also looked into the possibility of purchasing MiG- 29 fighters and long-range radar systems.

Experts think that Vietnam is interested in the further deliveries of naval equipment, in particular missile-armed boats and corvettes, as well as the considerable modernization of its armor.

Air defense deliveries are a promising area of military- technical cooperation with Vietnam.
