Just now I have read an article from vnexpress by Quốc Bảo

    http://vnexpress.net/Vietnam/Van-hoa/2004/06/3B9D378D/

In the article, Quốc Bảo told us that Diva literally means Goddess. I do not know how he reached that meaning. As I know, Diva is an Italian word using to name a main female singer who is naturraly important in a opera from The Ranaissance (1450-1600). When pop music became popular like what it implied, people borrowed that word to name a ''''''''super star''''''''. In my opinion, Diva does not relate to Goddess meaning at all.

If people want to relate super star singer to Goddess or mythological being they have a better word. That ''''''''s Siren who is half-bird and half-woman and has such extremly beautiful voice that sailors are always ready to jump into seas for them without any regrets in The Odyssey by Homer.

    Hi buddy,
Here is definition from Merrian-Webster Online Dictionary :
    diva
    Function: noun
Inflected Form(s): plural divas or di ve /-(")vA/
Etymology: Italian, literally, goddess, from Latin, feminine of divus divine, god
So maybe that is where Quốc Bảo got the definition . My understanding is when we refer some famous female singer as diva, we meant that she is the top performer ...
    My 2 cents ...

    Thank you Bro,
Webster ''s reliable source. Etymology of a word is sometimes intrackable that we must trust on some sources (by famous dictionaries or lexiconists).
The meaning of Diva as main operatic singer I drew from my course '' Classical music'' (textbook and my teacher). But I think that it ''s not as reliable as Webster dictionary.
As my knowledge, the most reliable english dictionary is Oxford English Dictionary (OED). However I can not look up that dictionary. Can anybody help me?
