Mình muốn có một chỗ để hỏi một số từ có nghĩa gần nhau. Bắt đầu là:

    1. procedure vs proceedings

    Your insight is appreciated.

    Hi there,

Procedure is a very popular, so you better stick to it and forget about the other, which is likely for the experts. Besides, proceedings is more like a legal term.

Anyway, use procedure when there's a series of steps you have to do as a correct way to do something, while proceedings is also a series of things, but just in general, and they are not followed step by step, they just happen one after another at a certain place or occasion.

I believe we should compare those two words (or may be three by adding Process) in the context of "a series of actions/steps". I checked several sources like Merriam-Webster, Reference.com, etc. But the sources give us different explanations to some extent. It seems those words are interchangeable in some context but not in other. Quite confusing.

@all I raised the question trying to find an clear cut explanation or correct/accepted usage of those words. But it also gives us an oppotunity to use English (writing/word usage) in a some how advanced way. That why I did not cite (copy/paste) available explanation from other sources. I appreciate your insight in your own words. That helps us all in many ways. We are no lexiconist, then mistake is inevitable. But that is why we join this forum. Thank you.

I would use procedure in that context.

I have never heard of anyone using proceedings in place of procdure in the context, especially in technical documentation. But it does not mean it can't be used.

As for process, I have not heard it used to describe in detail series of steps. But it doesn't mean people don't use it to describe procedure. However, I have heard it used to indicate a "general" way to produce, make some thing.

I guess we all have a lot more to learn about English.

"Tự phát" ơi, i think we should differentiate these above words as followed

v\:-* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} o\:-* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} w\:-* {behavior:url(#default#VML);} .shape {behavior:url(#default#VML);} 12.00 Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0in; mso-para-margin-right:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0in; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin;} A procedure is a specification of series of actions, acts or operations which have to be executed in the same manner in order to always obtain the same result in the same circumstances (for example, emergency procedures). Less precisely speaking, this word can indicate a sequence of activities, tasks, steps, decisions, calculations and processes, that when undertaken in the sequence laid down produces the described result, product or outcome. A procedure usually induces a change.

    Process

    Process
(lat. processus - movement) is a naturally occurring or designed sequence of changes of properties or attributes of an object or system. More precisely, and from the most general systemic perspective, every process is representable as a particular trajectory (or part thereof) in a system's phase space.

    Proceedings
means events, or the minutes of a formal meeting. In conferences, the proceedings are written record that includes the papers and the presentations given. In a legal sense, “proceedings” means that what happens in a court of law to settle a dispute.
