What is Valentine's Day

We honor the life of Saint Valentine,a Roman Christian who jailed and eventually executed for helping other Christians.This Happened on February 14th ,in 270 A.D.It's said that while in jail,Valentine fell in love with the jailer's blind daughter and miraculuosly restored her sight.Before his execution,he is supposed to have sent her a farawell note signed"From your Valentine"
People also believed that birds began matting on February 14th.The idea of lovebirds soon became asscociated with Saint Valentine,and the custom of sending cards or small gifts on his feast day is centuries's old.As for the heart-shaped cards:since accent time,the heart has symbolized love ,both human and divide.

Lịch sử ngày Valentine

Người La Mã cũng coi bà là nữ thần cai quản phụ nữ và hôn nhân. Ngày tiếp theo của ngày 14 tháng 2, ngày 15 tháng 2 là ngày đầu tiên của lễ hội Lupercalia. Cuộc sống của các chàng trai và cô gái trẻ bị ngăn cấm vô cùng hà khắc. Tuy vậy, họ vẫn có thể đến với nhau thông qua phong tục rút thăm tên nhau. Hic, các bác cứ quan trọng hoá ngày Valentine chứ em thấy cái ngày ấy chán phèo!!! Socôla thì ăn thả phanh quanh năm rùi, còn hoa hồng thì tại sao lại phải chọn đúng cái ngày giá tăng nhất trong năm để mua tặng nhau cơ chứ! Ngày nào chẳng có, giá lại rẻ rề... khi`khi`... em thấy ngày đó tốt nhất là hỏi a haft của mình thích ăn gì rồi đưa nhau đi nhét cho đẫy bụng. Vậy là dzui dzẻ cả làng... khi`khi`....

The History of Valentinê?Ts Day
Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday?
The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. But we do know that February has long been a month of romance. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tra***ion.
So, who was Saint Valentine and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? Today, the Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men -- his crop of potential soldiers. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons where they were often beaten and tortured.
According to one legend, Valentine actually sent the first 'valentine' greeting himself. While in prison, it is believed that Valentine fell in love with a young girl -- who may have been his jailor's daughter -- who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter, which he signed 'From your Valentine,' an expression that is still in use today. Although the truth behind the Valentine legends is murky, the stories certainly emphasize his appeal as a sympathetic, heroic, and, most importantly, romantic figure. It's no surprise that by the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France.

Valentine Symbols
It's not difficult to figure out the connection between the heart and Valentine's Day. The heart, after all, was thought in ancient times to be the source of all emotions. It later came to be associated only with the emotion of love. (Today, we know that the heart is, basically, the pump that keeps blood flowing through our bodies.)

It's not clear when the valentine heart shape became the symbol for the heart (we all know the heart isn't really shaped like that). Some scholars speculate that the heart symbol as we use it to signify romance or love came from early attempts by people to draw an organ they'd never seen. Anyway, here are some of the other valentine symbols and their origins:
?ã Red roses were said to be the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love; also, red is a color that signifies strong feelings.
?ã Lace has long been used to make women's handkerchiefs. Hundreds of years ago, if a woman dropped her handkerchief, a man might pick it up for her. Sometimes, if she had her eye on the right man, a woman might intentionally drop her handkerchief to encourage him. So, people began to think of romance when they thought of lace.
?ã Love knots have series of winding and interlacing loops with no beginning and no end. A symbol of everlasting love, love knots were made from ribbon or drawn on paper.
?ã Lovebirds, colorful birds found in Africa, are so named because they sit closely together in pairs -- like sweethearts do! Doves are symbols of loyalty and love, because they mate for life and share the care of their babies.
How about the "X" sign representing a kiss? This tra***ion started with the Medieval practice of allowing those who could not write to sign documents with an "X". This was done before witnesses, and the signer placed a kiss upon the "X" to show sincerity. This is how the kiss came to be synonymous with the letter "X", and how the "X" came to be commonly used at the end of letters as kiss symbols. (Some believed "X" was chosen as a variation on the cross symbol, while others believe it might have been a pledge in the name of Christ, since the "X" or Chi symbol, is the second letter of the Greek alphabet and has been used in church history to represent Christ.)
It became easier to mail valentines in the mid 1800s, when the modern postal service implemented the penny post. Until then, postage was so pricey that most cards were delivered by hand. (Today, you can send your valentine to Loveland, Colorado, to be postmarked from the romantically-named town.)
Esther Howland struck gold with the first commercial American valentines. Today, there are nearly 2,000 greeting card publishers in the United States.
Other Valentine Tra***ions
A variety of interesting Valentine's Day tra***ions developed over time. For example, hundreds of years ago in England, children dressed up as adults on Valentine's Day and went singing holiday verses from door to door. In Wales, wooden love spoons, carved with key, keyhole and heart designs, were given as gifts.

The gift of flowers on Valentine's Day probably dates to the early 1700s when Charles II of Sweden brought the Persian poetical art called "the language of flowers" to Europe. Throughout the 18th century, floral lexicons were published, allowing secrets to be exchanged with a lily or lilac, and entire conversations to take place in a bouquet of flowers. The more popular the flower, the more tra***ions and meanings have been associated with it. The rose, representing love, is probably the only flower with a meaning that is universally understood. The red rose remains the most popular flower bought by men in the United States for their sweethearts. In more recent years, people have sent their sweethearts their favorite flowers, rather than automatically opting for roses. Also making the list of valentine favorites are tulips, lilies, daisies and carnations.

Among early valentine gifts were candies, usually chocolates, in heart-shaped boxes. Companies like Godiva Chocolatiers have made high quality chocolate in artistic designs and elegant wrappings a tra***ional valentine's gift.

Valentine's Day in Japan ​

Valentine's Day
Japan celebrates Valentine's Day like America, but there are some differences. For one thing, they call it St. Valentine's Day.
Also, the advertising starts in about mid-January, with the main wave of advertising (sales, etc.) in the first two weeks of February. The main focus of all this isn't cards - it's chocolate.
Actually, I should say CHOCOLATE! One of our local department stores had half of one floor devoted to tables and tables of different kinds - big boxes, little boxes, filled, straight, white, brown, fancy shapes, make-it-yourself, more kinds of chocolate than I think I have ever seen. Since the store only has three floors (four if you count the grocery in the basement), this was a significant part of the store just for St. Valentine's Day presents!
Every grocery store, 24 hour corner store, and just about any other kind of store you can think of had a section devoted to St. Valentine's Day chocolates this year.
I should also mention that Hershey's and the other foreign chocolate companies seem to have a strong presence in all this.
The chocolates on February 14 are only given by girls - the men get the presents. In fact, in most offices, the girls give their boss a present ("giri" choco - duty chocolates).
In case you feel sorry for the girls - March 14 is White Day, when those men who got chocolates are supposed to return the favor.
By the way - this year, the "fad" of Valentine's Day ran right into the poor economic picture, and all the stores report very poor sales.
I know that last year I got about five different presents (and carefully returned chocolates in March). This year... six girls in the office got together and bought me one small box of chocolates.
That's okay - my wife, Mitsuko, made chocolate chip cookies for me!
So - St. Valentine's Day, in Japan, is a "Sadie Hawkins" day, when the girls give chocolate to the men, so that on White Day, March 14, the men will give them chocolate.
And you thought Hallmark had something to do with it?
