INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SCHOLARSHIP
FOR INTERNATIONAL GRADUATE STUDENTS
By the Korean Government
The Ministry of Information and Communications offers the scholarship for international students who would like to pursue their graduate studies in information technology (IT) or related engineering and science fields at Korean universities. It is part of an initiative by the Korean government to promote international collaboration of research and education in IT through the interchange of students between Korean universities and universities in the world. This scholarship requires no services and will be awarded to 50 outstanding international students in year 2003.

Eligibility: The student who seeks for the scholarship should meet the following requirements:
1. A student who received or expect to receive by the time of enrollment, a baccalaureate degree for M.S. programs or a masters degree for Ph. D. programs with a very high academic achievement and is under the age of 35.
2. A student who has the score of at least 550 (or equivalent of 213 in CBT) on the TOEFL if English is not his/her native language.

* Foreign nationals who stay in Korea or international students who are already in the programs of Korean universities are ineligible. But the international students who have finished their masters degree and plan to apply for doctoral programs are eligible.

Financial Aid:

1. For masters program: 10 million won (or about US$ 8,300*) per year for a maximum of 2 years.
2. For doctoral program: 14 million won (or about US$ 11,600*) per year for a maximum of 4 years.

* 4 years maximum for the student who pursues both the masters and Ph. D. degrees in Korea
* The equivalent amounts in US$ are subject to change based on the exchange rate

Procedure:
1. The applicant should receive the admission from a Korean university.
2. The applicant should submit an application form through the admission granting university.
3. The application dead line for the universities will be by November, 2002.
4. The awardees of the scholarship will be announced by December, 2002.
5. The financial aid by the scholarship will be received from March 2003.

* The above is for the students who plan to start their study from March 2003. The schedule will be repeated every six month. So, the application dead line for the students with fall admission (Sept. 2003) will be by April 30, 2003.

Required documents for application:

Application form, statement of purpose, a diploma, official university transcripts, TOEFL score (if English is not native language), and two letters of recommendation

All documents must be prepared either in English or Korean.

SV apply vào các trường của Korea trước (không giới hạn chuyên ngành), sau khi nhận được admission thì apply học bổng này. y/c học lực gỉoi (nhưng không qui định rõ phải là bằng giỏi), các loại achievement khác sao cho nổi bật (thi quốc tế, thi toán quốc, gia, ...). Chương trình này còn kéo dài nhiều năm. Tuy nhiên học bổng này không exclude tuition fee. Nhưng phải nói thêm là tại Korea, các lab thường trả thêm tiền cho sinh viên khi làm project, số tiền ấy ít nhất cũng đủ trả tuition fee, nên khoản học bổng coi như là được đút túi. Không yêu cầu phải là nhân viên nhà nước được cử đi học, mọi đối tượng đủ tiêu chuẩn là được tham gia.
Sắp tới sẽ có 1 đoàn GS và government officers của Korea sang VN để trình bày về học bổng này với các sinh viên VN quan tâm (very open to everybody). Dự kiến sẽ trình bày tại ĐH BK SG ngày 23/10 và ĐH BK HN ngày 25/10. Ông giáo sư Lee Sang-Gug là leader của đoàn này. Mọi người có ai muốn tham gia thì giới thiệu. Trường ĐH BKHN chỉ là nơi thuận tiện để người ta giới thiệu thôi, chứ không phải là chương trình học bổng dành riêng cho SV BK đâu. Hy vọng mọi người đừng có ngại mà bỏ phí cơ hội này!
