    Hi buddies,

I open this topic to talk about Vietnamese name. Most of us just know each other by our nick, not our full name. I am curious in knowing ur name and the meanings behind it. The meanings lie our parents'' hope, our representation, meaningful stories etc. You can also give comments about other names you know (from novel, movies or in the real life). Please share with us.Thanks.

In truth, I really dont know the meaning of my real name..
m.. I think when my dad named me, he did not know one day his daughter will receive this question so he maybe did not care about its meaning (j/k)
My real name in Viet or in Chinese doesn''''t have the specific meaning, so I myself find it out in English.
It''s called IVY = dây trường xuân (in dictionary )

As some of you may already know, my Vietnamese name is Hưng, meaning prosperity. It is a good name and easy to pronounce, so I decided not to change to an American name when I was naturalized. About a month ago, I found out that my name has a very vulgar meaning. Its slang means that you have a big male body part. Now that is embarrasing.
So now I''m thinking about changing my name to American name. I will only use it in the work place and at school. For my close friends and relatives, I prefer being called Hưng, or even better, King . I''m still clueless in finding an American name. You guys have any suggestion for a good name? I want a name that is easy to call, not a popular name nor a unique one. If it has a good meaning, or relates to a famous person, that would be even better. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for your suggestion. I liked that name "Henry" too when I came to U.S. But now that name is kinda obsolete, only old people named Henry. Harry sounds like hairy. Hale sounds like hell. And Harris is a name of a infamous teen killer. I was thinking about Harvey, but then my mom said it sounds like Hạ Vy, a girl name. So I guess I''m out of option for choosing a name starting with "H"

    1. Hal (dim of Henry)
    2. Hans (dim of Johannes)
    3. Harold (army dominion)
    4. Hector (holding fast)
    5. Helmut (helmet courage)
    6. Herbert (illustrious by reason of an army)
    7. Herman (warrior) /Hermann
    8. Hiram (Phoenician)
    9. Homer
    10. Horace
    11. Howell

I like Hugo. Most of Vietnamese kids love Hugo, Lina and their kids. So if u got the name Hugo, I would think of you as Mr. Hugo so far I'' ve known, ^o^ ^o^

All of the names you listed above are uncommon in US. Hal, Huge, Hubert, Hiram, Herbert, Hans are names for old people. Harold is the name of my cousin, so I can''t choose that name. Hector, this is kinda contradict to who I am Helmut : never heard of this, weird. Homer, everyone will make fun of me cuz Homer is a very famous cartoon character who is fat and stupid. Hugo is a Latin name. You might have heard of Hugo Chavez, the President of Venezuela, whom the US is trying to asassinate now. American people really hate this guy so I better not name something like him. Thanks for the advice though

@Tao_lao: This topic is so funny. You always create new kind of games.
@Gatihon: The story of your name is funny. Like you, I don''''''''t really like my name. My mother said that it was named by my grandfather. He tried to make it pronouned as the name of a famous lawyer at that time (1980s).
@King: I give you some links to find your approriate American name:
    http://www.hindustanlink.com/parenting/H-BOY.html
    http://www.thinkbabynames.com/list/1/H
http://babynamewizard.com/namevoyager/lnv0105.html (this one will tell you the popularity of each name).
With boy names, I like Thanh Tùng. Tùng is a kind of tree that represent for a gentleman (quân tử). It is still live well despite of any hard con***ions of nature. Tùng Quân give us the safe feeling when we are under its shade, specially with women.
Nghìn tầm gởi bóng tùng quân
Tuyết sương che chở cho thân cát đằng

With girl name, I like Thùy Trang (Thùy Mỵ + Đoan Trang), an ideal woman for us to get marriage, right ?
I think that our name, more or less, will give us the direction to live. We should live to worth with our name. When I have children, I will use those names.

Hey, King I have one suggestion about your name. Actually name is often given by our mama and papa or our grandma and grandpa. But if you think it might be useful to have other ideas, it is fine.
I am Catholic, in the history that I have learned. There is a King and his name is David. He is a great King than ever in the history . He came from a poor family, He used to take care of sheeps when he was a child. Once day, he could killed a huge guy from his enemy and helped his country out of being control by other country. After that when he grew up, he became a King. All of his people admired him so much. He leaded a good country with good people
You do not need to be as good as him but I think, your nick is King and I think David is also a great King. You have something nearly the same. That''s all
    You may think of that!
