Posts similar to these appear from time to time on newsgroups. This article presents the simplest (to my knowledge) method of creating user maps and uploading them to a GPS receiver. It is an alternative to the two articles, Getting Started and GPSmapper Guide, published some time ago on the GPSMapper page. The methods and techniques described there are still valid, but in the meantime some new developments have occurred making it possible to prepare such maps in an even simpler way. For more detailed instructions, refer to the respective software documentation (which at times is scanty, I must admit).
Important: Hardware compatibility
Only the following receivers are supported:
Garmin mapping units, such as 76S, Legend, or Vista
Alan Map 500.
Step 1: Download and install the software
GPSmapper -- a freeware package consisting of a map compiler (cGPSmapper) and a map uploader (Sendmap). You might later wish to purchase one of advanced versions which provide ad***ional features, such as POI and city indexing. To install, simply unzip the files to the target directory. Hereinafter it will be assumed that this directory is: Program FilesGPSmapper

GPSMap E*** -- freeware that enables you to create visually a new map and to display and modify an existing compiled map (requires the cGPSmapper compiler). To install, simply unzip the program file to the target directory. Run the program, go to Tools > Options > Tools, and enter the GPSmapper directory (e.g. Program FilesGPSmapper )

OziExplorer -- used to download waypoint and track data from the receiver and to calibrate paper maps (it is a great package which is also useful for many other purposes, but in the presented approach only this limited functionality will be used). A trial version is free, you might wish to purchase a much better commercial version. Installation with a standard wizard.

Open any Windows folder, go to Tools > Folder options > File types, and add the following action assigned to the .IMG type:
Action = Sendmap
Application = "Crogram FilesGPSMappersendmap.exe" com1 -p "%1"
(modify the line as necessary if you use another GPSMapper directory or another COM port to connect your GPS receiver).
Also, download the file Template.txt attached at the bottom of this page and save it in the directory where you want to keep your maps.
This Step 1 is to be executed only once. The following steps are to be executed for each map you want to create.
Step 2: Prepare a raster map as a background for your map; gather your track and waypoint data
1. Get a paper map of the area you are interested in (preferably a topo map with a grid). Scan it (observe the advice in the OziExplorer help). Run OziExplorer and calibrate the map. If you can get a calibrated map in another way (downloaded perhaps), simply skip this operation.
2. If you want to use your tracks and/or waypoints for your map, use OziExplorer to download them from the receiver and save them in .plt and/or .wpt files.
Step 3: Visually create a map
1. Run GPSMap E*** and open (File > Open) the calibrated map (xxx.map) obtained in Step 2.
2. Add (File > Add) the file Template.txt (it is in your map directory after Step 1). This file contains map header parameters which otherwise you would have to enter manually. Also, you may add the tracks (.plt) and waypoints (.wpt).
3. Open the Map properties > Header dialog and change the ID and Name fields:
ID: any 8-digit number (should not collide with other maps loaded to the receiver at the same time)
Name: name of your map (to be displayed in the receiver''s Map Info menu)
4. Now you may start actually drawing your map against the background of the raster map and your tracks/waypoints. Use the Create region icon (the "magic wand"). As in your GPS receiver, four categories of objects are available: POIs (points of interest), points (e.g. summit, bridge, trailhead), polylines (e.g. roads, trails, rivers), and polygons (e.g. lakes, forests).
Select the category from the drop-down list at the Create region icon
Click at the object vertices (right-click to end a polyline or polygon)
Select the object type from a list displayed after you finish creating the object
Finally, enter the object label.
5. Save your map in the "Polish format" (.txt) to a file different than Template.txt.
6. Export your map to the IMG/cGPSmapper format (File > Export > Garmin IMG). This operation actually means compiling. (Note: The present version (0.89b) does not allow you to select the file destination. The map is compiled to the file nnnnnnnn.img in the GPSmapper directory (where nnnnnnnn is the 8-digit ID of your map). You might wish to manually move it to a more convenient directory and to rename it to something more meaningful.)
7. Close GPSMap E***, locate the resulting file nnnnnnnn.img and right-click it. Select Open with GPSMap E*** . The map should be displayed and this way you make sure everything is o.k.
Step 4: Upload the map to your Garmin receiver
Connect and switch on your receiver. Right-click the file nnnnnnnn.img and select Sendmap. Your map should be transferred to the receiver. Go to the Map Info menu to see that it is there!

Định mua một cái iQue giống của bác nhưng sao thấy bà con trên Google Group nêu ra mấy nhược điểm của iQue nên cũng hơi chần chừ, bác @cman comment giùm cái.
1) Nghe nói khi dùng iQue như một GPS thì pin mau hết lắm, cái của bác dùng được bao lâu từ khi nạp đầy đến khi hết pin. Nếu bác dùng trên xe hơi thì vấn đề này không trầm trọng vì có thể dùng nguồn DC trên xe, tuy nhiên khi dùng để hiking hay trekking thì cần phải cân nhắc. Loại hand held thông thường thì có thể mang pin theo dự trữ chứ PDA thì ....
2) Nghe nói thỉnh thoảng iQue tự xoá hết dữ liệu, tôi cũng có 1 cái Palm V, cũng bị bệnh này. Trong khi dùng iQue, bác có vấp phải vấn đề này không ?

Do máy thu GPS ngày càng rẻ, cộng đồng người dùng ngày càng phát triển. Tuy vậy, các bản đồ dùng choc ác máy thu GPS lại không phát triển một cách tương xứng. Nhiều người dùng đã tìm mọi cách để tự phát triển bản đồ để tự dùng và phổ biến các kinh nghiệm này trên Internet. Dưới đây @gps xin giới thiệu một bài viết khác về cách làm bản đồ số cho máy thu GPS hiệu Garmin của tác giả Adam Newham. Vì bài khá dài, có nhiều hình ảnh minh hoạ nên @gps sẽ post thành nhiều phần theo qui định của box KTQSNN. At some point, recreational and professional GPS users alike will ask themselves the question, ?oHow can I get a map with all of the terrain features that I need into my GPS receiver?? Although road maps, topology maps, and nautical charts are available from receiver manufacturers and map suppliers, sooner or later most users find that some feature important to them is not on the map, or is in the wrong place. Of the three major manufac-turers of consumer GPS units, Garmin and Magellan have not yet marketed software that would allow users to create their own maps ?" whereas Lowrance has, with its MapCreate Series 6 software (http://www.lowrance.com/Mapping/MapCreate6/default.asp).
To the rescue (at least, for Garmin users) comes a resourceful group of programmers based in Eastern Europe who have created an application called cGPSMapper that makes it possible to create a map that Garmin?Ts MapSource software can read. This application has in turn spawned a number of graphic user interfaces (GUIs) to simplify the process of creating a custom map. Although these prog-rams are still in the early stages and require a bit of patience to use, you can now create a map and upload it to a Garmin receiver.
What You?Tll Need
Creating a custom map requires the following elements (see the end of this article for software sources):
? a PC running Windows 98 or a later version
? reference material to create the map, with known coordinates for the features being mapped
? Garmin?Ts MapSource (any licensed version will suffice, such as WorldMap, MetroGuide, R&R, Topology, or BlueChart). This product is used to actually download the file, once created. It also lets you preview the map being downloaded.
? OziExplorer
? The cGPSMapper utility
? The MapE*** GUI application for cGPSMapper (http://gps.chrisb.org/gps_mapper.htm)
? Unless you are experienced in running programs from the command line in Windows, you will need a knowledgeable friend to look over your shoulder the first time.
